Community events, content, and classroom advocacy for financial literacy
Caleb is from North Olmsted, Ohio. After transferring schools and discovering FinMango at Polaris Career Center, he's turned financial literacy into a personal mission — running content on his YouTube channel TheBoiCV, interning at the Middleburg Heights Chamber of Commerce, and pushing to elevate financial literacy to a core class in Ohio schools.
"I look at financial health as an understanding of what money is and knowing how to use it in a way to shape your life to what you want it to be. Our society revolves around financials and not understanding this key backbone of our society will leave you behind and uninformed. Having this knowledge available in my community will result in more mobility to what you truly want to do in your life and be comfortable with your financial health."
Financial health and wanting to teach it has been a thing I've wanted to accomplish my whole life. Growing up in Cleveland I have heard the misunderstanding of financial health and the lack of direct teaching for financial health at my previous school. I was grateful to move schools and be able to attend Polaris Career Center and learn much about financial health from FinMango. I want to be a part of an organization and sprout something that has truly helped me speak to my community.
A lack of education on financial health such as investing and budgeting — and the want to actually learn these important tools — is definitely the largest barrier in my local community. Teachers in my school who teach financial literacy often do not take the class as serious and treat it as more of a fill-in class. Treating financial literacy class as a core class like STEM and English would be a huge stepping stone in my community.
I want to do all kinds of reach — creating content, organizing community events — but also reach my community at a more personal level. School assemblies, and even reaching schools around Ohio and neighboring states. I'd love to work hand-in-hand with school curriculums like Bob Gillingham did for our school. I'm also an avid sports player, so hosting pickle ball events would be fun too.
