Connecting data, institutions, and communities to make financial health actionable

Eduardo is a Manager for ESG Statistics at the largest bank in the Dominican Republic, where he leads data analytics for financial inclusion programs. He has contributed to the analytical framework and measurement of programs that have helped bring over 1 million Dominicans into the financial system in the last 5 years, is deeply involved with the American Statistical Association, and joins as a FinMango Ambassador to shift the region's focus from inclusion to outcomes.

"It is the level of clarity and control one has over money. It is knowing where you stand, having a plan, and being able to seek assistance or strategizing in tough situations without compromising the future."

— Eduardo Charles Alba, on what financial health means to them

Why this work matters to me

I care because of my own experience with money. I had to work to put myself through college, and every financial decision — buying a car, helping at home, changing jobs — felt like a risk. Back then, I did not have the knowledge or tools to make those decisions. Today, after more than 10 years working in financial inclusion and analyzing data, I have realized that access and education on their own don't guarantee better outcomes. In Latin America, we are focused on getting people into the system, but financial health could help us understand cases when it only adds to their struggle.

The biggest barrier I see

Cultural trust. Many people, especially those more vulnerable, do not see financial institutions as allies. Instead, they prefer to trust informal lenders — at work or in the neighborhood — who charge them high interest rates, instead of helping them build a credit profile. This gap in trust keeps people from building scalability.

Their Plan as Ambassador

Locally, I'd organize discussions with regulators, banks and partners, to start shifting the focus from inclusion to outcomes. Internationally, I plan to use social media, professional networks and allies to participate in webinars, collaborations and seminars across Latin America and in the U.S. I'm interested in developing a Financial Health Predictor with FinMango and connecting that work with the American Statistical Association — launching data challenges to improve how we measure financial health and design new tools to help people understand their situations.
